Winners crowned at TS Champs

The National Series South West Regional Championships for Target Sprint took place on one of the hottest days of the year -–and there were some hot performances to match, reports Andy McGarty.

This qualifier, held at the playing fields at Exeter School, was one of seven national events leading to the National Final over the weekend of 6-7 October at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex. The event saw a full spectrum of age groups participating, many for the first time, with plenty of others returning to take part for a second year.

The fastest time of the day came from Arno Turner, who is part of the GB team, to win Junior Men in 05:27. Youth Men went to Jonno Williams, winning in 06:04, closely followed by Tom Gray and Isaac Ketterer. Tom’s time of 06:27 was two minutes faster than his time last year!

Araminta Stubbs won Junior Women with an impressive time of 06:18, while Flora Gray (Tom’s sister) took silver for the second year in a row. Youth Women was won by Erin Throgmorton- Appleby in a time of 06:59, with Caitlin Keaney second and Lily Howe in third.

The National Series Events in the UK are promoted and run by British Shooting. Former Commonwealth medal-winner and Olympic pistol shooter Gorgs Geikie is the national events & commercial co-ordinator.

Gorgs said: “It is great to be back at Exeter School for the South West Championships. It is a fantastic location to stage an event and has all the facilities and more that is needed. The school have been fantastic with their support and shared vision for Target Sprint which helps us provide the next generation of people with a challenging and enjoyable experience.

“Target Sprint is still a relatively new
event providing something different, fun and welcoming to all. This multi-sport culture is what got me on the road to the Olympics, and you never know, there could be a future Olympian in our fold.”
