Alliance appoints new head

The Countryside Alliance has announced that Sir Barney White-Spunner, the former head of the UK Field Army, is its new executive chairman.

Working from the Alliance’s London headquarters, Sir White-Spunner takes on a slightly different role to the departing chief executive Alice Barnard, but will nevertheless have overall responsibility for the organisation. Kate Hoey remains chairman of the board.

As well as heading the Field Army, Sir White-Spunner is the former editor of Baily’s Hunting Directory and the president of the Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles.

In a statement, he said: “I owe so much in my life to the countryside and I am now really looking forward to giving something back.”

Kate Hoey added: “I am absolutely delighted that Barney is joining us. His leadership will be invaluable in the challenges facing the British countryside.”
