Paying the rural penalty

A report commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has revealed that people living in rural Scotland need a bigger budget than those elsewhere in the UK to maintain a minimum standard of living. It found that some remote rural households needed 10-40 per cent more income to achieve the same standard of living as those in English urban areas, with factors including fuel bills, travel costs, and food prices.
