Peaks plan for shooting

Sustainable field sports should play a part in the Peak District, according to a new five-year plan laid out by local farmers, business people, environmentalists and community leaders.

The Peak District National Park Management Plan hopes to ensure the park is a diverse working landscape, with “thriving and vibrant” communities and an enterprising and sustainable economy, with an advisory group meeting twice a year to ensure these objectives are being met.

Recognising the importance shooting plays in the rural economy, the plan states that “a particular focus should be on encouraging more sustainable forms of game and land management, for example, on moorlands, grouse habitat management practices which sustain a broad spectrum of birdlife, and pheasant shoots which do not adversely impact on native woodland.”
