RSPB out of its league

The RSPB’s head of investigations, Bob Elliot, is due to give the keynote address at the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) ‘Gunning for change’ seminar.

The event is scheduled for 25 April in London, though it was cancelled in 2012 owing to a lack of support. LACS alleges that the purpose of the seminar is to ‘expose’ shooting, and it hopes the gathering will lead to a ban on shooting.

Countryside Alliance (CA) executive chairman Barney White-Spunner wrote on the CA website: “The RSPB maintains that it is not anti-shooting despite vocal disagreements with the shooting community over claims of widespread raptor persecution…

“It has even been heard to accept the environmental contribution of shooting and, of course, employs predator control in the form of shooting and trapping on its own reserves.

“However, by contributing so prominently as the only serious external organisation contributing to the LACS anti-shooting symposium, the RSPB is seriously compromising its claim to be neutral on the issue.”
