WHAT3WORDS: A potentially lifesaving app

Any hunter or countryside stalker might like to know about a phone app that could help shooters summon help in remote areas.

It’s called What3Words, and can be installed on iOS and Android devices through the relevant app store. You can then identify your location anywhere in the world with a code consisting of three words.

Each three-word code is unique to a 3m x 3m square. The patio at the EJ Churchill Shooting Ground clubhouse, for instance, is ///melons.nurtures.parent.

That’s the central part of the patio, mind – that patio actually covers 16 separate squares, so you could specify which umbrella you’re sitting under if you needed to meet up with friends, for example.

The app could be a lifesaver in a more serious situation, such as a stalker or gamekeeper being injured in a more remote part of the countryside.

What3Words is rapidly being adopted by UK emergency services, and works with your phone’s GPS even where there is no phone signal. So you could, for example, check the three-word reference then go for help, knowing that you could direct rescuers to the precise spot.

You can find out more at www.what3words.com, or search ‘what 3 words’ on your phone’s app store.
